CURRENT FORM

Die Mannschaft come into this tournament in strong form, having won their last nine matches, including a convincing 2-1 victory over the USA in their final pre-tournament friendly on 6 June.

This run demonstrates attacking fluency and defensive solidity under head coach Julian Nagelsmann and the four-time World champions are expected to top group E.

Group E also includes Ecuador and Ivory Coast, but Germany are comfortably superior due to their quality, depth, and experience at this level; qualities that should see them overcome minnows Curaçao with ease and build momentum for the knockout stages.

Meanwhile, Curaçao claimed a morale-boosting 4-0 win over Aruba in their final pre-tournament friendly on 7 June as they snapped a four-match winless run.

While the Blue Wave showed resilience in qualifying (unbeaten in their Concacaf path as the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup), these results highlight defensive vulnerabilities against top sides.

Curaçao's chances of advancing to the round of 32 are slim. They would need a miraculous result or two, like holding or shocking Germany, plus strong showings against Ecuador and Ivory Coast to have any hope.

TEAM NEWS

Major absentees for Germany are Serge Gnabry and young talent Lennart Karl due to injuries. Manuel Neuer’s fitness has been a talking point following a calf issue, though he is expected to feature.

Curaçao, on the other hand, have no major reported injuries or suspensions in their squad, allowing coach Dick Advocaat to field a full-strength side featuring a mix of European-based professionals.

WHAT WAS SAID?

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann

“Every opponent deserves respect... Curaçao will be interesting to analyze. But we won’t make the mistake of underestimating them," Nagelsmann said.

"Ivory Coast is a team that can be beaten, but should not be underestimated. Ecuador won’t be easy to play against. They have three or four real top stars...”

Curaçao head Dick Advocaat

“Germany are, of course, clear favourites in the group. They are still a great football nation.. It’s something special for us to be there. Playing against players you see on TV, who play in the top leagues. Anyone can surprise," Advocaat said.

"Why not Curaçao? That’s what we’ll try to do. We are not the favourites, we know this when we start. But people who aren’t favourites can surprise. Today, you can even go on to the next round with two or three points.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Jamal Musiala, Germany: The Bayern Munich attacker is a creative dynamo with exceptional dribbling and vision. The 23-year-old's ability to unlock defences with quick feet and incisive passes makes him a major threat to Curaçao’s backline, especially in transitions.

Leandro Bacuna, Curaçao: The experienced captain and versatile player brings leadership, composure on the ball, and a set-piece threat. The 34-year-old's physicality and tactical awareness could help Curaçao stay organised and look for counters or dead-ball opportunities against Germany’s attack.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Germany and Curaçao have never met on the football pitch.

This Sunday’s group E opener at the 2026 Fifa World Cup will be the first-ever meeting between the two nations at any level.
