Downs under pressure ahead of Lupopo clash

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes that the Brazilians are beginning to feel the heat in the CAF Champions League as they prepare to face Saint-Eloi Lupopo in Group C at Stade TP Mazembe on Sunday.

CURRENT FORM
Prior to Sundowns’ 2-1 win over Gomora United in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday, the Tshwane-giants recorded a potentially damaging 2-1 loss against Al-Hilal in the CAF Champions League last Friday.
Lupopo on the other hand, suffered a 2-0 defeat against MC Alger in their most recent CAF Champions League assignment, a result that put Group C on a knife edge.
As it stands, Sundowns are second in Group C, three points behind log leaders Al-Hilal who lead the way on eight points after four matches played. Alger’s win over Lupopo puts them right among the mix to qualify for the next round and now trail Sundowns by one point in third position.
Lupopo, who are in fourth position, are likewise on four points along with MC Alger as they occupy the bottom placing in Group C with a -3 goal difference.
Group C are among the most tightly contested in the tournament currently, while Sundowns will take on MC Alger on home soil in their final CAF Champions League fixture on Saturday, 14 February.
WHAT WAS SAID
Reflecting on Sundowns’ CAFCL journey this season, coach Miguel Cardoso believes that his players are now under increased pressure to win their second Champions League title.
“There’s increased permanent pressure on my players regarding the Champions League and cups,” Cardoso said.
“As much as they are professionals and experienced and should deal with it, it’s not that simple because, in the end, we’re all human beings.
“In all press conferences of the Champions League before and after, even when we go abroad, there’s always that question of when are we going to put the second star on our badge.”
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Saint-Eloi Lupopo - Michael Kimputu: With goals being hard to come by for Saint-Eloi Lupopo in the CAF Champions League this season, Kimputu was the last player to score for his side in the showpiece. The versatile star managed to get his name on the scoresheet during Lupopo’s 1-0 win over Alger on 25 January and will once again hope to inspire his side against Sundowns this weekend.
Mamelodi Sundowns – Arthur Sales: As a growing presence in the Downs attacking department, Sales currently has three goals in six appearances to his name in the CAF Champions League. Whether it be as a starter or from the bench, Sales is expected to play a major role in Sunday’s tie.
