PAARL Gimnasium, Paarl Girls' High, and Stellenberg emerged as the Western Cape's leading schools in the Botho division of the DStv Schools Netball Challenge powered by Bestmed provincial finals at DF Akademie on Saturday, securing qualification for the national finals in Boksburg next month.

The three schools booked their places at the national showpiece, which will be hosted at Hoërskool Dr E.G. Jansen from 23 to 25 July, after a day of fiercely contested action featuring the province's top school netball teams.

One of the most dramatic encounters of the tournament came in the ranking play-off between northern suburbs rivals Stellenberg and Durbanville. The teams were at a stage locked at 22-22. Stellenberg held their nerve under pressure to clinch a thrilling 24-23 victory and secure a pace among top rankings.

The Botho division title race ultimately came down to a showdown between long-time Cape Winelands rivals Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Girls' High. In a tightly-contested clash, Paarl Gimnasium edged their neighbours 18-16 before producing a dominant display against Stellenberg, winning 28-15 to finish as the top-ranked team in the province.

Paarl Girls' High bounced back strongly from their narrow defeat to Gimnasium, defeating Stellenberg 22-14 in their final play-off fixture to secure second place overall and confirm their qualification for the national finals.

In the Ubuntu division, De Kruine from Touws River produced one of the comeback performances of the day. After trailing early, they fought back to defeat Weston 25-18 and advance to the play-off rounds.

Their reward was a meeting with one of the tournament favourites, Manzomthombo Secondary School from Mfuleni. Despite their determined efforts, De Kruine found the challenge too great and suffered a 40-8 defeat.

Khanyolwethu Secondary School from Lwandle, however, finished the competition in impressive fashion. They overturned an earlier setback to defeat Manzomthombo 26-20 in a decisive play-off encounter, securing the top spot in the Ubuntu division and booking their place at the national finals as the section's No 1-ranked team.

The provincial finals brought together 15 of the Western Cape's strongest school netball teams, all competing for five coveted berths at the national finals.

The DStv Schools Netball Challenge, powered by Bestmed Medical Scheme, is a partnership between MultiChoice and South African Schools Netball. Since its launch in 2021, the competition has since provided a platform for aspiring young players from both urban and rural communities to showcase their talent and pursue their dreams of one day representing the Spar Proteas.
