The new South African season will get under way on the first weekend of August, the Premier Soccer League announced on Wednesday, with holders Orlando Pirates kicking off in defence of their MTN8 title.

Pirates last year became the first club to win the top eight title three years in a row, and now have their sights on an unprecedented fourth successive trophy.

They have home advantage as they take on Polokwane City in their quarterfinal tie at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday, 2 August, kicking off at 3pm.

That will be followed the same day by Sekhukhune United against TS Galaxy at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, which will start at 6pm.

Th two other MTN8 quarterfinals will played on Sunday, 3 August as last year’s runners-up Stellenbosch host AmaZulu at the Cape Town Stadium (kick off 3pm) followed by champions Mamelodi Sundowns against rookies Richards Bay at 6pm.

It will be Sundowns’ first outing since their trip to the Club World Cup and a first MTN8 match for Richards Bay, who ended last season in eighth spot in their best finish.

Pirates won a record third MTN8 in a row last year when they beat Stellenbosch 3-1 in the final in Durban, coming back after conceding their first goal of the game.

Details of the dates for the rest of the tournament have yet to be made available by the PSL, who are also yet to release the fixtures for the coming league season.
