Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that "everything is under control" for the World Cup opening ceremony, despite ongoing protests by teachers.

However, she told reporters that Mexico City's famed Zocalo square – a focal point for protests – may no longer be able to host a planned fan zone during Thursday's opening game between Mexico and South Africa.

If "for any reason" the protesters prevent the usage of the square for the fan zone, she told AFP, there will be alternative public viewing areas in the capital.

The CNTE teachers union has been on strike since last week to demand a salary raise and pension reform.

Teachers have blocked streets in the capital on a daily basis. On Tuesday they marched on the main highway leading to the Azteca stadium and earlier had toppled commemorative statues of football players.

Family members of people disappeared by criminal groups or authorities also plan to join city-wide protests on Thursday.

Mexico is co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and the United States.
